Urgent statement to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the deteriorating health situation of the Southern political detainee, Zahra Saleh

Bern - Switzerland, 06/01/2011

The Southern Observatory for Human Rights (southern Yemen) sends its best congratulations to the esteemed organization of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR).

The Observatory would like to inform you urgently about the health situation of the political detainee, Zahra Saleh. She is a citizen from southern Yemen, she is arbitrarily detained, and now remaining in a security center at the camp of Tariq in the southern Yemeni province of Aden, since November 8, 2010 till the moment, without an accusation, referring her to the judiciary, or at least transferring her to a prison that has the least standards of the official prisons.

Here we send this urgent communication to your esteemed organization, and through it to the rest of the human rights organizations and the international community, to inform you about the deteriorating state of health of the political southern Yemeni activist, Zahra Saleh, as a result of the long time of imprisonment and the humiliating and degrading treatment, especially for she suffers from the heart disease and diabetes, and on this very day specifically, a cry was heard from her cell as a result of a sharp pain struck out in surprise and with questionable causes, without taking her to the hospital.

The Southern Observatory, which is informing you of this humanitarian situation, urges you to intervene immediately to the Yemeni government to release the political detainee, Zahra Saleh, and enable her to treatment.

We also hope that you would adopt the issue of hundreds of prisoners of conscience in southern Yemen who are exposed to different methods of torture and abuse agianst their rights as citizens and political detainees as well. The international community should know the practices of the Yemeni authorities against the people of the south whose their human rights are violated.

We draw your attention to the report of the Observatory on the human rights violations during the month of December, last year, that is attached along with this statement, while we ask you for an appointment to clarify it.

The Southern Observatory for Human Rights takes this opportunity to express to your esteemed organization its sincere appreciation and respect.

The Southern Observatory for Human Rights (SORH)
