H.E. Ambassador Olof Skog The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Sweden to the United Nations
(UN) The President of the UN Security Council.
Your Excellency,
We the members of the US-Task Force for South Yemen (USTFSY) are pleased to
submit to your Excellency, in your capacity as President of the UN Security
Council, and to all esteemed members of the Council, our greetings and best
wishes for your success in serving the global peace and security,
especially at this critical time of the work of the Council and the UN at
large.
The USTFSY is composed of many Americans, including those of South Yemeni
descend, who live in the United States of America. The USTFSY mission is to
consolidate the American-South Yemeni ties and enable the people of South
Yemen gain their freedom and self- determination, and to establish peace
and progress for a free and independent South Yemen. Therefore, the USTFSY
is supportive of the work of the United Nations for establishing peace and
stability in that part of the world.
In this context, we are honored, in USTFSY, to bring to your kind attention
our concern and protest of the content of H.E. Ismail Ould Cheikh’s, the
Special envoy of the UN Secretary General to Yemen, latest report to the UN
Security Council on January 26, 2017 which he wrongly described the
peaceful struggles of the people in the South Yemen for freedom, self-
determination, and independence, as “grievances”.
Such description of the cause of the South Yemen’s people marginalizes
decades of peaceful struggle of South Yemen Movement for freedom and
independence, insults numerous sacrifices of South Yemen people, and
essentially contradicts the final agreement of all Yemeni political parties
who participated in the National Dialogue Conference in Sana’a in 2013
(under the auspices of the UN) that recognized South Yemen’s Cause as being
central to peace and stability in the Republic of Yemen.
Mr. Ould Cheikh description of the Southern Cause as mere “grievances”
also contradicts the UN Security Council’s resolutions 924 of June 1, 1994
and 931 of June 30, 1994 which emphasized that the Council will remain “
seized of the matter “ regarding the future of the South Yemen after the
brutal invasion of North Yemen’s military against South Yemen’s
territories.
The USTFSY, therefore, requests your good offices to document this protest
and make it available to the office of the Secretary General and other
members of the Security Council.
The USTFSY, while being in contact with the legitimate government of H.E.
President Abdrubo Mansour Hadi and with many officials in local authorities
in South Yemen, believes that the peaceful ending of the current war in
Yemen requires granting the people of South Yemen, their inalienable rights
for self determination to enable them to choose the system of governance
that best responds to their aspirations and longing for peace, freedom,
democracy and socio-economic progress.
Your Excellency,
We are hopeful that the UN Security Council will enact its resolutions 924
(1994) and 931 (1994). Enabling the people of South Yemen to determine their future is inseparable
from the UN mission to establish permanent peace and stability in what is
known today as Yemen.
Thank You.
US-Task Force for South Yemen
Washington, DC.
